We are The Lovellers, documentary wedding photographers based in Figueira da Foz, on Portugal's Silver Coast. For thirteen years we have been photographing weddings across the country, with a particular love for the ones that happen with the sound of the Atlantic in the background. From Aveiro to Porto, from Figueira da Foz to the wild beaches of the North, we know the light, the rhythm, and the small details that make a Portuguese beach wedding unrepeatable. What makes a Portuguese beach wedding different
Portugal's coast is not one beach. It is hundreds of them, each with its own character, its own light, its own personality. The Silver Coast, where we are based, runs from Figueira da Foz to Aveiro and beyond, with long Atlantic beaches, rolling dunes, and skies that shift from gold to pink in the final hour of the day. Further north, the coast becomes wilder: dramatic cliffs, working fishing villages, and the kind of light that turns ordinary moments into photographs you will keep on the wall for decades.
A beach wedding in Portugal is not a tropical postcard. It is something rarer. It is the smell of salt in your hair, bare feet in cold sand, the deep blue of the Atlantic behind your first kiss. It is the contrast between formal celebration and the wildness of the ocean, and it is one of the most photographically rewarding contexts a wedding can happen in.

Portugal's coast lets you photograph more in a single day than most destinations let you photograph in a week
A wedding day on the Portuguese coast is rarely just one place. The morning preparations might happen in a coastal villa with the sea visible through the bedroom window. The ceremony might take place on the sand, with the Atlantic as the only witness behind you, or in a small chapel a few minutes inland, with stone walls that have stood for centuries. The cocktail hour moves outdoors as the light starts to soften. The party happens with the sound of waves carrying into the night.
Each setting brings its own light and its own emotion. Within a single wedding we may photograph in five distinct contexts, and each one is treated with the same care: the intimate detail of preparations, the gravity of the ceremony, the warmth of the cocktail, the softness of golden hour, the energy of the party. Five chapters of one story, written across the same day.
HOW A BEACH WEDDING UNFOLDS
What to expect on the day
A beach wedding has a different rhythm. The day usually starts later, with the ceremony scheduled to align with the gentlest light of the afternoon. Mornings are slower. Preparations happen with the windows open and the sound of the sea coming in. Many couples choose smaller guest counts, between thirty and one hundred, which makes the day more intimate and the photographs more honest.
The ceremony itself often happens between five and seven in the afternoon, depending on the season, to catch the soft light before sunset. The cocktail hour stretches into golden hour, the most photographically rewarding time of the day. Dinner happens as the sky changes colour, and the party carries into the night with the sound of waves still present in the background.
Coastal weather requires flexibility. We arrive prepared for wind, for sudden cloud, for the shift of light that happens faster near the ocean than inland. None of that takes from the day. It usually adds to it.

Thirteen years of photographing weddings have taught us one thing: the most beautiful images happen when nobody is watching the camera. The other side of the bride's veil is reaching the beach. The friend who travelled across the ocean to be there. The look exchanged between you and your father moments before the ceremony. The first time you both let go of each other's hands during the party. None of these moments can be directed.
What truly matters is what happens between people. Not what the day looks like through a polished filter, not images we love friends and family to share. We follow the wedding closely without interrupting, without pulling people aside for posed portraits, without disrupting the rhythm of the day. Our documentary work has been internationally recognised by This is Reportage, Fearless Photographers, Inspiration Photographers, Bride Association, and Wedding Photography Select. None of that recognition came from posed photographs.

Where do you photograph beach weddings in Portugal?
We are based in Figueira da Foz and photograph regularly along Portugal's Silver Coast, including Quiaios, Mira, Costa Nova, and Aveiro. We also travel to the Northern coast to photograph in Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Esposende, and Viana do Castelo. For couples marrying along these coastlines, we travel as part of the standard service.
What is the best time of year for a beach wedding in Portugal?
The high season runs from May to September, with the warmest weather and the most reliable light. June and September are particularly beautiful: warm enough for the beach, but with softer evening light and fewer crowds than peak August. April and October offer dramatic skies and a different kind of beauty, ideal for couples who want intimacy over heat.
What about wind, weather, and the unpredictability of the coast?
The Portuguese Atlantic is alive. Wind is part of the experience, and so are sudden shifts of light. We photograph prepared for it, with equipment and clothing chosen for coastal conditions, and an approach that embraces what the day gives instead of fighting it. The most memorable beach wedding photographs we have ever taken were not the ones from perfect weather days.
Do you only work with the venues you partner with, or anywhere?
We work anywhere along the coast where you decide to celebrate. We have a long partnership with Casa da Praia in Quiaios, where we photograph regularly and know every corner of the venue. But we are equally familiar with private villas, smaller chapels near the sea, and beaches where the ceremony happens directly on the sand.
